MARKHAM, ONTARIO, CANADA, October 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- NordSpace Corp., Canada's only vertically integrated space missions company, announced today the successful launch and on-orbit operation of Terra Nova, the company's first pathfinder satellite. Terra Nova launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base, has successfully completed its Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), and is operating nominally in extremely good health with all mission objectives met to date. The satellite is now preparing for its commissioning phase, with NordSpace's Missions Team in continuous communication with the satellite from the ground.

With Terra Nova on orbit, NordSpace becomes the first Canadian launch company operating its own hardware in space. The milestone establishes a critical foundation for the company's launch and space systems programs by generating TRL-9 flight heritage for unified NordSpace hardware, software, and procedures that will power everything from the company's orbital-class rockets to its satellites, and by allowing NordSpace to walk in the shoes of the launch customers it will serve from the Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Terra Nova is a privately funded, dual-use defence and commercial demonstration mission, built in a manner consistent with how NordSpace operates across the company: with its own capital, on its own timelines, and against its own technical standards. The satellite was designed, built, integrated, and tested entirely in-house at NordSpace's Space Systems Lab (SSL), including all thermal, vacuum, and vibration environmental testing, a vertically integrated development approach practiced by only a very small number of companies in the world. The complete program was executed from first design to launch readiness in nine months, a cadence that reflects NordSpace's broader operating philosophy of speed, execution, and in-house capability.

Terra Nova carries four NordSpace-developed technologies that will fly across the company's future spacecraft and directly support its launch program: Athena, NordSpace's scalable spacecraft bus; Zephyr-EP, the company's electric propulsion thruster; Chronos, an edge-AI camera system running on an onboard NVIDIA GPU; and Sentinel, NordSpace's mission control platform, which will operate every NordSpace mission including launches of the company's orbital vehicles. Each subsystem now accumulates flight heritage in orbit, de-risking its use in subsequent commercial and defence spacecraft and informing the mission systems that will support upcoming NordSpace launches from ASX.

Of equal importance to the spacecraft program is what Terra Nova retires for the company's launch program. Operating a satellite in orbit requires the full stack of capabilities a launch provider must deliver for its customers, including avionics flight qualification, mission operations, payload integration, ground segment coordination, and the customer-facing processes that surround every mission. By executing Terra Nova end-to-end, NordSpace is retiring substantial technical, operational, and business risk across precisely those areas, with direct benefit to the upcoming inaugural launch of the Taiga suborbital pathfinder from ASX and the subsequent orbital launches of the Tundra and Tempest vehicles.

Over the coming weeks, NordSpace's Missions Team will continue commissioning Terra Nova and running operational tests across the satellite's capability set, which includes Space Domain Awareness, wildfire monitoring, and Arctic monitoring using artificial intelligence at the edge. These capabilities are aligned with Canadian defence and public safety priorities, from the protection of Canadian sovereignty to the predictive monitoring of national-scale wildfire and northern threats, and the lessons learned will feed directly into the company's forthcoming programs.

Terra Nova is the first of several spacecraft missions NordSpace will fly as part of its end-to-end strategy. The company will shortly announce its larger Athena+ and Aquila spacecraft bus platforms, both engineered for the rapid deployment of sovereign constellations and hosted payload missions, as well as its forthcoming Canadian ground station network, which will complete NordSpace's control of the mission chain from ground to orbit to data. Together, these elements establish the cost structure, operational control, and data-level sovereignty that NordSpace is building both for itself and for its customers, and they are purpose-built to generate durable demand for the Tundra and Tempest orbital launch vehicles flying from ASX. The world's most successful launch companies, from SpaceX to Rocket Lab, have shown that vertical integration across launch, spacecraft, and infrastructure is not optional for a serious launch company. It is a prerequisite for the cost structure, cadence, and control that modern space missions demand, and NordSpace is building that model in Canada.

"These are the beautiful moments people like me live our entire lives for. One satellite for NordSpace today, testing real hardware and mission operations in orbit for our rockets and spacecraft, is a full constellation tomorrow launched on our Canadian-made rockets, carrying Canadian-made payloads, from Canadian soil. The scale of what we are building at NordSpace, and the moats we are stacking between launch systems, space systems, and infrastructure, will create a structural advantage significant enough to deliver the most precious resource of all: full autonomy and control. That is what we mean when we talk about true sovereignty, and it is what Canada deserves from its space company," said Rahul Goel, CEO and Founder of NordSpace.

“The successful commissioning of Terra Nova signals the beginning of a cadence of space missions for the Athena bus platform and future Aquila satellites. NordSpace's vertically-integrated structure will enable the proliferation of satellite constellations for dual-use applications, ensuring Canadian sovereignty in space at a scale previously unseen by this country over the years ahead.” said Victor Nifo, Director, Space Systems Program.
