IAM strengthens environmental hygiene work during “Mid-autumn Festival and National Day Golden Week” period

MACAU, September 24 - The number of tourists in Macao is expected to significantly increase during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Golden Week. To maintain the environmental hygiene of the city, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will strengthen the street cleaning and inspection work in the various districts of Macao. Additional garbage bins will be installed in crowded areas and tourist spots. The management and cleaning of public toilets will also be reinforced. These efforts aim to provide the public and tourists with a clean and tidy city environment.

Strengthening street cleaning and inspection work and optimising layout of garbage collection facilities in key areas

IAM will increase the cleaning and inspection personnel to strengthen the street cleaning and inspection in the various areas in Macao. It will also coordinate with the Macau Residue System Company, Ltd. and supervise its implementation of various cleaning efforts. The frequency of garbage collection, street cleaning and inspection will be increased in crowded locations such as entry and exit ports, Barra, Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square and Old Taipa Village, so as to timely handle miscellaneous items and discarded items on streets and reduce the accumulation of garbage.

Furthermore, as the amount of garbage may increase during the holiday period, IAM will temporarily install additional garbage bins in areas such as tourist spots, pedestrian zones, ports and squares to optimise the layout of garbage collection facilities and provide convenience for the public and tourists to dispose of garbage.

QR codes facilitate navigation to public toilets for tourists

Over 200 signposts bearing instructions to public toilets have been installed in various districts. The public and tourists can scan the “public toilet navigation” QR codes on these posts with their mobile phones to use the navigation function to proceed to nearby public toilets.

Strengthening promotion and calls for joint protection of beautiful and clean city

In terms of promotion and education, IAM will utilise multiple channels, including electronic screens and posters in entry and exit ports, promotional banners on streets, advertisements on buses and television, etc. to disseminate environmental hygiene information and urge the public and tourists to jointly protect the city’s environmental hygiene. They should not discard garbage, cigarette ends, etc. carelessly. They should comply with the laws and regulations relevant to environmental hygiene, so as to jointly protect the clean and beautiful appearance of the city of Macao.
