Environmental group aims to boost Alpine wildlife via natural grazing

(MENAFN) An environmental organization is aiming to restore wildlife and enhance ecosystem resilience in the French Alps by bringing back natural grazing practices.

“We are working with the residents of the Dauphine Alps to make nature functional again in this region,” said Aurelien Guiraud, spokesperson for Rewilding France, part of the Rewilding Europe Foundation. He explained that the Dauphine Alps is the 11th region where the group carries out projects and that it finances rewilding efforts across the countries where it operates.

The group supports natural processes to help ecosystems adapt to climate change, including initiatives such as forest regeneration and restoring rivers to their natural states. Guiraud emphasized that the goal is to allow nature to respond autonomously over time.

One key focus is the revival of herbivores and wildlife by reintroducing natural grazing, a practice that has declined over the years. “This ensures more resilient ecosystems,” Guiraud said, noting that the foundation identifies areas with human influence and carries out targeted actions while monitoring their impact on biodiversity.

Two major projects are set to begin in 2026 in the Dauphine Alps. One initiative involves halting timber production on a quarter of a 400-hectare public forest and leaving deadwood, insects, and microorganisms in place to create habitats for birds and other wildlife. Trees will be selectively left standing in cooperation with the National Forests Office, with five per hectare preserved to support biodiversity.

The second initiative focuses on reintroducing large herbivores to enable natural grazing, which contributes to forest regeneration and biodiversity. Guiraud also highlighted that grazing helps reduce combustible material, lowering the risk of wildfires, a threat that climate change is expected to intensify in the region.
